At CKREU.com we understand that for small businesses the holiday season isn’t just about decorations and discounts — it’s a pivotal time to increase awareness and sales by meeting consumers where they are. According to a recent report from Google, today’s holiday shoppers take a journey that blends searching, streaming, scrolling and shopping. Our role is to help you understand how to align with that journey so you can turn interest into purchases.
Current Consumer Journey
What makes this holiday season different? Google’s research shows that a high percentage of U.S. holiday shoppers mix their shopping behaviors, including looking up products online, watching videos, scrolling social media and ultimately buying either online or in store. In fact, 64% of holiday shoppers say they blended these shopping behaviors during the last holiday season.
This means your marketing and sales efforts cannot follow a simple ad > store > sale model. Consumers might spot your product on social media, then check reviews on YouTube, then search your website, then compare pricing and finally decide whether to buy in-store or online. At every step, the experience must support their decision.
The New Value Equation
Google defines what it calls the “new value equation” for holiday shoppers: they evaluate purchases based on three pillars: Right price, product confidence and purchase convenience.
Right price (the entry ticket): Shoppers want to feel they are getting value for their money. The perception of a good deal drives the first step in their decision. Nearly half actively search for competitive pricing and use major sales events to manage budgets. If your price or perceived value is off, you risk being excluded early.
Product confidence (the differentiator): Beyond price, consumers check quality, durability, brand reputation, reviews and ratings. According to the research, 66% say how long an item will last is more important than just short-term savings. They use search and YouTube to validate.
Purchase convenience (the clincher): Finally, all that research and interest leads to a decision. However, if the buy itself is difficult or adds unnecessary barriers, they may drop off. For online shoppers this means clear info, fast checkout, available shipping and easy returns. For in-store buyers it means product availability, store details, pickup options and a quality in-store service.
What This Means For Your Business
If you run a small or local business, you may feel at a disadvantage compared to large brands, but you can absolutely take advantage of these insights with smart planning and the right support. Here’s how:
Be where your customers search and browse. Make sure your business shows up when someone searches your product or service by having a robust Google Business page and a clear Google ads strategy. That means your website needs up-to-date product/service info, correct pricing and great visuals.
Build confidence through content. Since shoppers check reviews and watch videos, consider embedding short videos and customer testimonials.
Make buying easy online and offline. If you sell online, ensure checkout is smooth, shipping is clear and returns are easy. If you also have a local store or offer in-store pickup, make inventory, hours and location visible online. Google found that many in-store visits begin with an online search, so you must make the online-to-offline bridge strong.
Use pricing and promotions smartly. While you don’t have to slash prices, you should emphasize the value of your product. You should also clearly post any holiday deals, and make sure your website and marketing reflect those offers.
