Social Media has certainly evolved over the last several years. And although it feels like a relatively new phenomenon to some of us, it’s been shaping our views and habits for over 20 years. We don’t see it slowing down. A newer trend however has more businesses jumping on the social media train. While it can be very beneficial to promote your business and connect with consumers, there are pros and cons to consider.

The number of social media users continues to grow with currently over 74% of internet users having a social media account.  This number is certainly higher with younger generations. It can be big business if content is focused strategically. Let’s go over a few of the dos and don’ts for businesses that want to monetize from a social media reach.

Don’t half commit. If you create an account, make sure that you use it.  It takes some dedication, patience, and repetition to build a social media presence. However, the payoff can be abundant! Your competitors are putting in the work. Bottom line, if you want to be present to your consumers on social media, then you need to have both feet in.

Don’t get political. Never use your business’s social media accounts to take a stance on controversial topics, world events, or argue in the comments. The account should always remain positive and create value for your following.

Do add value. Social media is a form of communication, so make sure that you are speaking to your target audience and doing it well. Think about what types of things you can share that are really going to bring in new customers – special offers, online promotions, giveaways, enticing images, and so on. Make your audience crave the content you share and fall in love with your brand!
