The Summer Olympics begin this week in Paris, and Google will play a large role in bringing the Games to people across the globe. Expect to see many commercials touting the latest news about Google Search and Google Gemini, its AI tools. Comedian and super fan Leslie Jones is expected to have a viral presence as she uses Gemini to learn more about the Games.
It’s tempting to post about the Olympics via your business’ social media channels, but unless you’re an official sponsor, doing so can result in huge fines and the potential loss of your social media accounts. Yes, this even means showing support for the athletes. While you can post anything you like on your personal accounts, posting on your business accounts is a violation of IOC trademarks.
Businesses cannot use the words (or hashtags) Olympics, TeamUSA or Games among many other phrases, and you cannot use Olympic Rings and many other visual elements. What you can do is share content from an official sponsor to your page as long as you don’t add any trademark violating words or hashtags.
